Index Sequentiarum Bohemiae Medii Aevi | Codicologica et Hymnologica Bohemica Liturgica

Introduction

The catalogue Index Sequentiarum Bohemiae Medii Aevi includes documentation of sequences in liturgical and non-liturgical manuscripts in medieval Bohemia (up to ca 1550). Currently, the catalogue covers period up to ca 1420 (up to the outbreak of Hussite wars) and includes primarily sources of secular (= non-monastic) origin. The database enables various search options (individual manuscripts, repertory for one particular feast, use in and outside liturgy) and is compatible with Cantus index. Complementary to the sequence database is the rubric Manuscripti sequentiarum (that includes short description of sources that are not included in the catalogue Manuscripti Liturgici Ecclesiae Pragensis.

Each description is composed of following components:

• Siglum (following the RISM system) and folio / page, where the sequence can be found

• Incipit of the sequence (as it appears in the source, not standardized) and the Rubric that precedes the entry in the manuscript

• Rubrics2 that is used in cases, when a sequence is part of a larger set (i. e. Alia prosa [de sancta Maria], etc.) or included in the Mass (In octava sancti Wenceslai, etc.)

• Feast in standardized form, as defined in cantusindex

• Form of the inscription (M: text and music; T: text only; R: rubric; C: text with commentaries, as used in manuscripts coming from the Prague University)

• Cantus ID that provides link to other databases included in cantusindex.
